Ok, my girl is now 3 1/2 (going on 25!!), and has been toilet trained for the best part of a year now. How did we do it? To be honest, I really don't know - it just wasn't that hard! Truly it wasn't! I think for a couple of nice sunny days over the summer, we let her run round outside in her underwear and she wet them once or twice and hated the feeling of it running down her leg - she got very upset at that!
So after explaining it to her - and suggesting she try the toilet out like a big girl, she became accustomed to using it. She had her little 'ladder-seat' that she could climb up and then sit on and do her thing. She was always so proud of herself and she sure preferred that, than having it run down her leg! At first we always made a point of asking her every half hour or so if she needed to go to the toilet - she'd have a little think and then reply with a yes or no. haha Very cute really!
Now, as for my boy - he's now 2 1/2, and I have to wonder if he's just not ready. I have my Mum on one side saying that "all kids should be trained by the time they are two - I had you girls trained at 18 months!!!". On the other side, I have Plunket saying "they will start that when they are ready - for girls it's usually around 3 years, and for boys it's around 3 years 8 months". HELL!! Another YEAR of nappies!!!! Who wants to be changing a boy at 3 1/2 years old??!!! Not me! haha
And if my Mum had us kids toilet trained at 18 months, then we were either super-smart kids or she had some kind of secret weapon!!! Or is it just a "Mum" thing to say! lol I have to wonder.
Anyway, I tried the same thing with my boy (that I had done with my girl) - over the summer, I gave him a couple of days with just underwear on, knowing that when he pees he'll hate the feeling of it running down his leg and he might just want to use the toilet. Well, that certainly didn't work! My girl came running up to me and said he's done wees - so I go over and have a look, and there's my boy giggling away at what's running down his leg!! He thought it was hilarious!!! lol So... that didn't work!
The only difference between my boy and girl at this stage - is that my girl had dry nappies when she woke in the morning. I have been told that is a sign that they are ready to use the toilet and control their bladder. My boy is still saturated in the mornings. I just figure he isn't ready....
