I was chatting to a friend the other day about how my husband tends to be harder on our son than on our daughter, whereas I'm probably harder on my daughter than I am on our son. She was saying that the exact same thing happens in her household! Don't get me wrong, I don't let my boy walk all over me - but I guess you could say that he might get away with a bit more than my daughter does. (I can just see my husband nodding his head in agreement! lol).
Anyway, I have a theory as to why this might happen in many households. I think it's to do with having certain expectations of your child that's the same sex as you. For instance, I know exactly the kind of girl I want my daughter to grow up being (I'm talking about personal attributes here). I would like her to be happy, kind, caring, thoughtful, sweet, friendly, non-judgemental, but at the same time smart enough that she won't get walked over or used. And, I have no doubt, my husband has ideals of the kind of boy our son might grow up being and with certain qualities.
Therefore, in our own ways, we are trying to guide them as best we can to become that kind of person or to have those attributes. It's all very interesting though, but it's important to note that with all I have said above - does not mean that my son gets away with everything! lol I think at the end of the day they are disciplined equally and accordingly.
I think being in a two parent family helps a lot too - and because of the equality through both my husband and I each doing our part, we have a couple of happy, secure kids that are very close and love each other dearly - however, have their moments where they fight like cat and dog! haha Soo... in summing up, I think where my husband has a soft spot for our girl and I have that for our son - it balances each other out!
